Kasi Flavour10: Exploring the Intersection of Fashion and Football Culture

The build-up to the semi-final clash between South Africa and Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is charged with excitement as both teams prepare for Wednesday night’s game to earn their spot in the tournament’s final. The anticipation is palpable. Two teams, ready for an intense battle on the football pitch.

Despite entering the tournament as underdogs, Bafana Bafana has defied expectations with impressive performances, beating World Cup semi-finalists Morocco in the round of 16, and thanks to Ronwen William’s heroics, defeating Cape Verde in the quarters. On the other side, Nigeria, a perennial powerhouse in African football, has also displayed their prowess with a star-studded team that includes Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Alex Iwobi.

Both South Africa and Nigeria have a rich footballing culture and a tangible passion for their respective teams. To honour this, South African creative agency Kasi Flavour10 celebrates the two countries’ football heritage with a collection deeply rooted in bridging the gap between the past and present through archiving and preserving their football culture and legacies.

1992 Bafana FIFA Inaugural Jersey.

Bafana Bafana started competing in international football after the end of apartheid in the early ‘90s. The team was readmitted to international football by FIFA in 1992 to put pressure on the apartheid regime and to mark the end of the country’s sporting isolation. This jersey takes us back to when Bafana played their first international match after readmission on July 7 1992 against Cameroon.

1980’s Mesh Knit Football Jersey.

Paying homage to the vibrant and energetic style of the ‘80s, this jersey’s unique mesh knit fabric not only adds a touch of nostalgia but also ensures breathability and comfort on the field. The bold and dynamic colour palette, reminiscent of the iconic hues from the 80s, brings a sense of excitement with its retro-inspired patterns and a nod to the free-spirited nature of the ‘80s.

Kalakuta F.C football jersey.

Inspired by the iconic Fela Kuti — his music, activism, and his style —  the distinctive prints on this jersey pay homage to the embroidered shirts he used to wear at the shrine performing his Afrobeat tunes.

Naija Football Jersey | Green

This jersey features bold, green hues with the Super Eagles badge front and centre. Its intricate,  graphic patterns reflect Nigerian heritage and culture, while also featuring football boots and footballs to bring everything together.

Nigerian Tie-Dye Football Jersey.

Growing up, Kasi Flavour admired Taribo West, not only because he was a hard defensive midfielder who did dirty work for playmakers but also because of his distinctive and ever-changing hairstyles. He used his hair as a form of self-expression, showcasing creativity and individuality while playing for Nigeria and Inter Milan during the ‘90s — and this jersey is a tribute to his distinct style.

Kasiflavour10 x Urbanmosadi | Cowrie Appliqué Trackpants

Inspired by the colours of Nigeria, and the use of cowrie shells, which are historically significant in various African cultures, these trackpants are imbued with a sense of tradition and authenticity. Combined with a comfortable and modern trackpants silhouette, this fusion of contemporary fashion and cultural symbolism would make an eye-catching addition to your athleisure fit rotation.
