Wanda Lephoto in conversation with Trevor Stuurman and Kabelo Kungwane
REKAOFELA — a collaboration rooted in the artistic expression of the power of shared passion and South Africa’s rich football culture. The month-long pop-up experience at 44 Stanley, Johannesburg was dynamic, combining the best of The Manor, Kasi Flavour10, Blessing Rooi, and Wanda Lephoto in a physical space that celebrated and honoured South African heritage.
The collaboration celebrated the long-lasting friendship of Trevor Stuurman, Kabelo Kungwane and Wanda Lephoto, a physical manifestation of their brotherhood over the years and a look back on how far they’ve come, individually and collectively. 10 years after the iconic photo of the three of them, they talked us through some of their favourite moments of the concept store, how they maintained their distinct vision when approaching a collaboration such as this one, what they value most about collaboration and much more.
This physical space has almost opened a home for us, usually things like this are done by bigger corporations, big brands and never by us because we never easily have the resources. This, in essence, was us reclaiming the things that we do for ourselves, not for the brands. It was amazing because it was you guys telling your own stories in your own voices, for us. there’s ownership of the stories, the inspirations, the journeys.
I liken it to putting a flag in the sand, to say that you are here and taking up space. Whenever you give birth to anything physical it has a life of its own – That will give birth to something else. This entire conversation will be able to extend into different dimensions and spaces beyond our own imagination.
I feel like we have grown so much in the creative field, but we are still the same dudes that we were ten years ago. Nothing has died in expressing ourselves creatively.
