The power of collaboration remains one of the most potent tools for creative transformation. Thobeka Mbane’s latest project, The Jozi Collective, aims to showcase the power of storytelling through clothing by bringing together designers whose work is as layered and meaningful as the identities they represent.
Founded by designer Siyabonga Mtshali, Siyababa Atelier is an embodiment of being unapologetically authentic, bridging fashion, art, and queerness. For The Jozi Collective, Mtshali carefully curated a selection of designers who bring unique perspectives and styles to the table.
Firstly, Siyababa Atelier, with its provocative storytelling, uses fashion as a medium to reimagine Zulu masculinity and challenge traditional notions of identity. Their designs are layered with meaning, much like the intricate patterns and textures that adorn their garments.
At the heart of The Jozi Collective is a clear vision: to shape the future of African fashion into one that is diverse and expressive — a celebration of storytelling through fabric, texture, and form, contributing to a broader narrative of identity, resilience, and creativity.
Among the selected designers is Thabo Kopele, whose work draws power from personal narrative. His designs are intimate reflections of his lived experiences, shaped by the people and style stories that surround him. His garments become wearable memoirs, stitched with memory and pride. For NOTE Clothing, fashion emerged from necessity. Born out of survival, the brand’s founder learned the craft from his mother — a skill that once put food on the table, and now, fuels a brand defined by resilience.
MacGale’s designs are a visual love letter to Soweto — a place where tailoring is part of the community’s very fabric. His garments celebrate the complexity of township life, where tradition and innovation intersect in every stitch, seam, and silhouette.
Lastly, Hint Clothing, still in the process of self-definition, offers pieces that reflect a journey of becoming. Though their paths may differ, what unites these designers is a commitment to storytelling. Together, they form a collective voice that speaks to African identity and expression.
What ties these brands together is not just their passion for fashion but their shared goal of telling stories through their designs,” says Mtshali. “They’re not just creating clothes; they’re crafting narratives that speak to their experiences, their cultures, and their identities. By giving them a platform, we’re not just showcasing their work; we’re amplifying their voices and celebrating the diversity of African fashion.
