Afro Nation’s WAV Festival debuted in Cape Town on Friday 2 January, slipping effortlessly into the city’s summer rhythm, and we were proud to experience it as media partners. Set at Green Point Track, the festival felt more like a gathering than a spectacle — rooted in R&B, soul and diasporic sound, with a crowd fully tuned into the moment.

WAV moved with confidence for its first edition. Strong attendance, warm energy and a seamless flow from afternoon into golden hour set the tone, while the balance between international artists and South African and African voices felt both global and grounded. Mariah The Scientist’s South African debut stood out as an intimate, emotive moment, alongside dynamic sets from Kelvin Momo, Shekhinah, Langa Mavuso, Nanette, Manana, Kujenga and the Strictly Soul Hour featuring Akio and emerging artist Yandani. The addition of Wale, who surprised the audience with an appearance from British-Nigerian singer Odeal, and Isaiah Falls expanded the festival’s reach while keeping the mood cohesive.

Style was as much a part of the experience as the music. From the stage to the crowd, fashion felt relaxed, expressive and personal — sheer layers, denim and soft tailoring moving easily from day into night. Elevated VIP moments by Africa House Members Club and partner activations from Don Julio, Johnnie Walker, Frequency, Spotify and Roses helped shape an atmosphere that felt considered, celebratory and deeply in tune with its audience.
