Mount Nelson opened its gates to an afternoon that marked a turning point in the relationship between fashion and space. Set along the famous Cape Town hotel’s palm-lined grounds, the launch of the Magugu Suite signalled the next chapter for Thebe Magugu as he steps into luxury hospitality design.

Joanne Strauss MC’d the afternoon, a performance by the iThemba Youth Choir set the cinematic tone, and Zakes Bantwini soundtracked the afternoon, keeping the energy present throughout the day. The occasion marked the announcement of the Thebe Magugu Suite, which coincides with the tenth anniversary of Magugu’s brand and represents his first interior design foray. Developed in collaboration with StudioLandt, the suite draws on Magugu’s long-standing research into identity and place, combining British heritage interiors into conversation with South African design language. Similar to the Johannesburg-based atelier, Magugu House Cape Town is both a boutique and a gallery, dedicated to collaborative projects, like the artworks that rotate in partnership with Southern Guild. Works by Lulama Wolf, Zandile Tshabalala, Banele Khoza, Lorenzo Plaatjies and Trevor Stuurman also feature within the suite.

The event was nothing short of considered. Guests arrived in style, set against Mount Nelson’s pale façades, manicured lawns and the picturesque palms. Linen, tailoring and sculptural silhouettes were everywhere, with the Nelly acting less as a backdrop and more as an active participant in the scene. Fashion here felt contextual, in dialogue with the space rather than competing with it, a true celebration of the ethos that transcends through Magugu’s work. Within one of the country’s most historic hotels, Magugu’s work enters a new register, where design, culture and hospitality intersect, and where African creative practice is afforded both permanence and room to evolve.
