FNB ART JOBURG 2026: THE PEOPLE, THE ENERGY, THE FAIR

Johannesburg came alive around art as FNB Art Joburg returned for its 19th edition, bringing together artists, galleries, collectors, curators, designers and creatives from across the continent and beyond.

While the artworks and exhibitions remain at the centre of the fair, its atmosphere is shaped just as much by the people moving through its spaces. Opening night offered a snapshot of Johannesburg’s creative community — a gathering of those who make, collect, curate, document and engage with contemporary African art.

This year’s fair was marked by a number of significant moments and recognitions. Botswana-born artist Kelebogile Marope was awarded the 2026 FNB Art Prize, becoming the first artist from Botswana to receive the prestigious honour. Her recognition speaks to the increasingly expansive geography of contemporary African art and the importance of creating platforms that extend beyond established artistic centres.

Across the fair, conversations unfolded between generations, disciplines and practices, reflecting the breadth of the contemporary African art landscape. Galleries presented established names alongside emerging voices, while collectors, curators and visitors moved between exhibitions, installations and conversations.

For Manor, the fair offered an opportunity to document not only what was on the walls, but the people who give these spaces their energy. From opening night through the final days of the fair, Johannesburg’s art community came together in its many forms — dressed, gathering, observing and participating.
